HOW TO CHOOSE A KENNEL FACILITY
The goals of American Boarding Kennel Association member kennels are happy, healthy pets and satisfied pet owners. This requires a cooperative effort from the kennel and pet owner. The following is a list of features to look for while selecting a kennel and how Ark Animal Hospital meets these standards.
1. Telephoning the Kennel
Call to see if the kennel can accommodate your pet. At Ark Animal Hospital, we appreciate a reservation as early as possible, especially during holidays. Our trained staff is able to care for a pet of any age or size, including dispensing medication, at no extra charge.
2. Make a personal visit to the facility
Kennels should never have anything to hide and welcome tours. During your visit, observe or ask about the following:
A. General appearance of the kennel:
Following regular daily clean-up procedures, the kennel should look (and smell) neat and clean. Ark Animal Hospital employees love to show off a clean kennel but generally cannot allow visitors into area where pets are housed. Some animals react unpredictably to strangers (they become fearful or aggressive) resulting in animals injuring themselves or developing stress related intestinal problems. Also, visitors may unknowingly transport contagious agents (bacteria or viruses) into the kennel.
B. Security
Whenever you go on a trip, your pet may want to ‘find’ you. Boarding facilities are designed with this in mind, and Ark Animal Hospital provides security with covered, sturdy enclosures that are bolted to the ground and a six foot tall double fenced exercise yard. Dogs are never outside unsupervised.
C. Safety
Ark Animal Hospital’s Resort is always be free of sharp objects, harmful chemicals and objects your pet may swallow. There are solid dividers between pets to promote safety and to prevent male dogs from urinating into other enclosures. Our floors have traction even when wet. A fire extinguisher is easily accessible.
D. Supervision
Proper supervision is the key to good boarding. Ark Animal Hospital constantly monitors pets during the day by staffed trained to recognize illness and distress. Our Veterinarians walk through the Resort every night after hours to make sure everyone is resting peacefully.
E. Sanitation
Ark Animal Hospital’s Resort is always free of dirt, waste accumulation, odors and parasite infestations. All enclosures are disinfected daily regardless of whether or not the occupants had ‘accidents’.
F. Health Care
Water: Ark Animal Hospital provides each pet with a clean bowl of fresh water at all times.
Food: Ark Animal Hospital feeds all guests Science Diet Maintenance or an owner provided food in clean bowls twice a day at no extra charge. Dogs receive a freeze dried liver treat after each potty break, and they are soon trained to ‘go to bed’ voluntarily! Cats also get a variety of doctor approved treats throughout the day. Please let us know if your pet has any food allergies!
Immunization Requirements: Ark Animal Hospital requires dogs to be vaccinated against Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper (DHPP), Giardia, Leptospirosis, Canine Flu and cats vaccinated against Rabies, Feline Distemper (FVRCP) and Calcivirus.
Medication Policies: Ark Animal Hospital is happy to medicate your pet at no extra charge, providing the medication is in it’s original container. If heartworm prevention is due while your pet is boarding, please bring the medication and date due.
Parasite Control: All pets are checked for fleas and ticks before entering the Resort. If intestinal parasites are discovered during your pet’s stay, treatment will be given at the owner’s expense.
G. Animal Comfort:
Temperature Control: The Resort’s indoor facilities are maintained at temperatures between 75 and 80 degrees.
Ventilation: Ark Animal Hospital provides the Resort with it’s own ventilation system to minimize the spread of airborne bacteria and viruses without drafts.
Light: Lights are at comfortable levels during the day and turned off at night as to not interrupt the natural sleep cycle.
Bedding: The Resort provides rest benches in every dog enclosure and soft blankets to all pets. Owners bedding is not allowed for sanitary reasons. For safety, if a pet destroys it’s bedding then the bedding will be removed.
Sleeping Quarters: Ark Animal Hospital’s Resort enclosures for dogs measure three by six feet. Cat enclosures measure three by three feet with multiple levels for the cats to jump to. Multiple pets of the same family and species are placed in double apartments, doubling the space for each animal and allowing for separation when needed. Soothing music is left on low during the night to lull our guests to sleep.
Exercise Area: Our guests are taken outside four times a day to run and burn up their energy. Our 6-foot tall wrought-iron fence is puppy proofed and the yard is cleaned immediately after each elimination. No dog is ever outside unsupervised. With owner consent, we offer group play at no extra charge. Or, if your dog would enjoy spending his entire day in our doggie day care, there is a discounted day school rate for dogs while they stay with us.
Cats are periodically placed in the indoor play structure where scratching posts and toys are provided. Cats get much attention from staff and visiting clients alike!
